Vintage Carpano Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia Re Dal 1786 Poster
Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia — the first King of unified Italy, the Risorgimento monarch whose portrait once adorned the currency of a nation — appears in this extraordinary early Testa poster as the embodiment of Carpano's royal heritage. Created around 1949, at the very beginning of Testa's relationship with the Turin vermouth house, this poster is one of the most historically layered and visually ambitious in the entire Carpano series.
A King, a Royal Warrant, and a Great Vermouth
Carpano's connection to the House of Savoy runs deep. The Re Dal 1786 designation — "By Royal Appointment since 1786" — spans the reigns of multiple Savoyard monarchs, and Vittorio Emanuele II, who brought the disparate states of the Italian peninsula together as King of Italy from 1861 until his death in 1878, stands as perhaps the most historically significant of Carpano's royal patrons. For Testa to invoke his image in a 1949 poster was to connect a contemporary brand to the deepest roots of Italian nationhood — a bold and intelligent creative decision.
Armando Testa and the Weight of History
Armando Testa (1917–1992) was not yet 32 years old when he created this poster, yet the design shows a maturity and a comfort with historical subject matter that belies his age. Where a lesser designer might have produced something stiff or reverent, Testa created an image full of graphic energy — proof, even at this early stage, that he understood how to make the past feel urgently present.
A Rare and Significant Design
This poster, carefully restored from an original vintage source, is among the most historically significant in the Carpano-Testa series. It speaks to Italian national identity, royal tradition, and the long history of vermouth with equal authority. A genuinely rare piece for serious collectors of Italian graphic design and history.
The poster has been carefully digitally restored by an artist remove any major signs of wear and tear and to refresh the original colours, retaining the vintage character of the poster.
