George Barbier – The Master of the Jazz Age Illustration


Born in Nantes in 1882, George Barbier rose to the front rank of Parisian artistic life with extraordinary speed. By 1911 he had held his first solo exhibition; by 1914 his illustrations were appearing in the most prestigious publications in Europe and America. His work for Gazette du Bon Ton, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar defined what fashionable women looked like and how fashionable life was imagined during the Jazz Age. He also collaborated with Erté on theatre costume design and contributed to the visual world of the Folies Bergère. Le Jour et la Nuit, created at the height of his powers, stands as one of his most theatrical and visually compelling works.
