Birra Italia – A Milanese Icon


Founded in 1906 on Corso Sempione in Milan, Birra Italia rapidly established itself as one of the city's most dynamic brewing houses, producing classic light, dark, and high-alcohol lagers brewed with local well water. The brand expanded swiftly, absorbing rival breweries and becoming a beloved staple of Milanese café culture. It remained popular until the 1970s, was briefly dormant, then was relaunched in 2007. Hohenstein's poster — created in the very year of the brewery's founding — is one of the earliest and most celebrated images in the brand's history.


Hohenstein at the Height of His Powers


By 1906, Adolfo Hohenstein was at the peak of his commercial artistry. His tenure at Officine Grafiche Ricordi had produced legendary opera posters for Puccini and Verdi, iconic advertising campaigns for Campari, and work that had placed Milan firmly on the world map of modern graphic design. The Birra Italia poster — with its bold female figure, lush colouring, and confident decorative line — represents the Stile Liberty tradition at its commercial finest. It was one of his last major Milanese works before he left Italy permanently.

This is one of the most recognisable and reproduced Italian beer posters of the Art Nouveau era — a jubilant image that encapsulates the ambitions and aesthetic pleasures of a city and a nation on the rise.

The poster has been carefully digitally restored by an artist to remove any major signs of wear and tear and to refresh the original colours, retaining the vintage character of the poster.
