Cloisonné Glass Woman Watching a Sacred Scene – Adolf Hohenstein 1899


One of the most quietly powerful images in the history of Italian poster art, this 1899 lithograph by Adolfo Hohenstein was created to advertise Cloisonné decorative glasswork — a medium perfectly suited to the luminous, spiritual aesthetic of the Art Nouveau era.


The Image and Its Meaning


The composition shows a woman seen from behind, standing still before a magnificent stained-glass window depicting a nativity scene — the Virgin Mary, the infant Christ, and the Magi captured in jewel-like colour. The woman holds a cluster of irises, a flower synonymous with Art Nouveau imagery, and gazes upward into the sacred light. The result is an image that blurs the boundary between advertisement and devotional art, between commerce and beauty — something Hohenstein managed with extraordinary mastery.


Adolfo Hohenstein – Father of Italian Poster Art


Born in Saint Petersburg in 1854 to German parents, Adolfo Hohenstein settled in Milan in 1879 and became one of the defining artistic voices of the Stile Liberty movement — Italy's interpretation of Art Nouveau. As art director at the legendary Officine Grafiche Ricordi, he created iconic opera posters for Puccini and Verdi, advertising campaigns for major Italian brands, and landmark graphic works that shaped the visual identity of a nation. He attracted other great talents — Metlicovitz, Mataloni, and later Dudovich — to the Ricordi atelier. He is considered the father of Italian poster art, alongside Cappiello and Mataloni.


A Masterpiece of Stile Liberty


This poster, printed in 1899 at the height of the Art Nouveau movement, exemplifies Hohenstein's signature qualities: bold composition, rich jewel-toned colouring, flowing lines, and a deeply decorative sensibility drawn from Japanese aesthetics, medieval European art, and French poster tradition. It is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The poster has been carefully digitally restored by an artist to remove any major signs of wear and tear and to refresh the original colours, retaining the vintage character of the poster.
