La Belle Dame Sans Merci Robe du soir de Worth – George Barbier 1921 Vintage Fashion Print
La Belle Dame Sans Merci – Robe du soir de Worth – George Barbier (1921) Vintage Fashion Poster

Mystery, elegance, and the dangerous allure of beauty — George Barbier's 1921 fashion illustration La Belle Dame Sans Merci is one of the most dramatically charged and visually arresting works in his celebrated catalogue. Created for a Worth evening gown and preserved in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, it is an image that has lost none of its power in over a century.

The Title – Keats, Worth, and Barbier

The title La Belle Dame Sans Merci — "The Beautiful Lady Without Mercy" — is borrowed from the medieval French poem made famous in English by the Romantic poet John Keats in 1819. In Barbier's hands, the phrase becomes a label for the modern fashionable woman: imperious, magnificent, and utterly indifferent to the hearts she breaks. The gown is a creation of the House of Worth — the legendary Paris couture house founded by Charles Frederick Worth in 1858, which had been dressing royalty, aristocracy, and society's most brilliant women for over sixty years by the time this illustration was made.

George Barbier and the House of Worth

Worth was one of the houses whose creations Barbier illustrated most memorably in the pages of Gazette du Bon Ton. The collaboration between Barbier's visual imagination and Worth's architectural gowns produced some of the most iconic fashion images of the early 1920s. La Belle Dame Sans Merci — with its birds of paradise, dramatic silhouette, and electric palette — is among the finest of these collaborations.

A Piece of Fashion History for Your Space

Born in Nantes in 1882, George Barbier was the supreme visual poet of the Jazz Age. His work for the world's most prestigious fashion publications, his theatre collaborations with Erté and Diaghilev, and his pochoir illustrations for luxury editions placed him at the very centre of the 1920s cultural world. This illustration, produced at the height of his powers, is a masterwork of mood, glamour, and graphic confidence.

The poster has been carefully digitally restored by an artist to remove any major signs of wear and tear and to refresh the original colours, retaining the vintage character of the poster.
