Vintage Carpano Vermouth Poster, Re Dal 1786


In 1953, as Italy celebrated the stabilisation of the Republic and the accelerating prosperity of the post-war years, Armando Testa created this landmark poster for Carpano — a design that placed the brand's extraordinary royal heritage front and centre. The legend Re Dal 1786 — "By Royal Appointment since 1786" — had by this point adorned Carpano's bottles and marketing for generations, but Testa gave it a graphic treatment of an entirely new kind: bold, modern, and charged with the confidence of a brand that knew exactly what it was.


The Oldest Royal Warrant in Italian Drinks


Carpano's royal warrant dates to the late eighteenth century, when Antonio Benedetto Carpano's vermouth caught the attention of the House of Savoy. The Re Dal 1786 credential is not merely a marketing claim — it is a fact of Italian cultural history, spanning the reigns of multiple Savoyard monarchs and surviving the Risorgimento, two World Wars, and the birth of the Italian Republic.


Testa's Graphic Confidence


Armando Testa (1917–1992) was at this point well established as Carpano's most important creative collaborator, and the 1953 Vermuth poster shows his growing confidence with the brand's visual language. The design is authoritative without being pompous, proud of its heritage without being backward-looking — a difficult balance that only the most accomplished designers achieve.
