Vintage Laundry Soap Powder 1949
This cheerful 1949 advertising poster for Persil captures the brand at a pivotal moment — the immediate post war years, when laundry detergent advertising across Europe embraced a new optimism, presenting the promise of clean, bright whites as part of the fresh start that households everywhere were hoping for after the hardships of the war years.
Persil, launched in Germany in 1907 and soon established across Europe, was one of the pioneering brands of modern laundry detergent its name derived from two of its original active ingredients, perborate and silicate. By 1949 it had become a household staple across much of Europe, and its advertising reflected the cheerful, forward-looking mood of the early post war consumer recovery.
Laundry advertising of this period is a charming and often overlooked corner of graphic design history — full of bright colours, happy domesticity and an infectious enthusiasm for the mundane pleasures of a clean home. This 1949 Persil poster is a lovely example of the genre.
