Vintage Italian Mele Napoli Fashion Poster — Marcello Dudovich, 1907
This exquisite 1907 fashion poster by Marcello Dudovich was created for Mele & Ci, the celebrated Neapolitan department store that was, at the turn of the 20th century, one of the most fashionable retail destinations in southern Italy — and one of the most important patrons of Italian poster art of the Belle Époque.
Marcello Dudovich (1878–1962) produced some of his most celebrated early work for Mele, and these posters are now regarded as among the finest Italian commercial art of the period. His fashion illustrations for the store combined the decorative elegance of the Belle Époque with a modern sensibility that was entirely his own — graceful, stylish figures rendered with a confidence and lightness of touch that made his work instantly distinctive.
Mele & Ci was founded in Naples in 1889 and quickly became a landmark of Neapolitan commercial life, commissioning leading poster artists of the day — Dudovich, Cappiello, Metlicovitz and others — to create advertising imagery of exceptional quality. The Mele posters of this period represent a golden moment in the history of Italian graphic art.
