San Pellegrino Terme Marcello Dudovich 1940 60
San Pellegrino Terme — Marcello Dudovich, 1940-60

This elegant poster by Marcello Dudovich promotes San Pellegrino Terme, the celebrated spa town nestled in the Valle Brembana of the Bergamo Alps, whose mineral waters and grand Belle Époque casino and thermal baths made it one of northern Italy's most fashionable resorts from the late 19th century onwards.

Marcello Dudovich (1878–1962) was one of the greatest Italian poster artists of the 20th century, whose career spanned more than five decades. By the time this poster was produced, Dudovich was in the later years of his illustrious career — yet his work retained the warmth, elegance and quiet sophistication that had always set him apart. His ability to evoke leisure, beauty and aspiration in a single image was undiminished.

San Pellegrino Terme had been a byword for refined Italian spa culture since the early 1900s, attracting aristocrats, artists and Europe's fashionable set to its grand hotels and thermal establishments. The town's name became globally famous through its mineral water, but for those who knew it, San Pellegrino was above all a place of beauty, tranquillity and the very best of Italian hospitality.
