Cioccolato Venchi Vintage Chocolate Poster
This digitally restored art print brings back to life one of the most charming and collectible advertising images of early twentieth-century Italy. Created by Leonetto Cappiello for Venchi — the renowned Cuneo-based confectioner — the poster dates to the prolific advertising era spanning 1921 to 1930, when Italian and French brands competed to attract consumers through spectacular visual art.
The image exemplifies Cappiello's genius: a dynamic, instantly memorable figure intertwined with the product, rendered in a palette of rich cocoa browns, warm golds, and vivid accent colours. Against a stark background — a hallmark of Cappiello's mature style — the composition leaps off the wall with the same vitality it had over a century ago.
Historical Background
Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) was born in Livorno, Italy, and trained as a caricaturist before relocating to Paris, where he transformed the art of commercial poster-making. Often called the "Father of Modern Advertising", Cappiello broke decisively with the elaborate, crowded style of his predecessors — notably Jules Chéret and Alphonse Mucha — in favour of bold silhouettes, flat colours, and a single, unforgettable visual "hook" that could be absorbed at a glance from a speeding carriage or early automobile.
By the 1920s, Cappiello had become the most sought-after commercial artist in Europe, creating iconic posters for Campari, Bouillon Kub, Chocolat Klaus, and dozens of other brands. His work for Venchi — a chocolate manufacturer founded in 1878 in Cuneo, Piedmont, by Silviano Venchi — was part of a wider campaign to establish the brand's luxury credentials in both domestic and export markets during Italy's post-war economic expansion.
Venchi's chocolate had already won international acclaim at the 1878 Turin Exposition before becoming one of the most widely distributed Italian confections of the early twentieth century. Cappiello's poster, with its playful sensuality and exuberant colour, perfectly mirrored the indulgent pleasure the brand wished to convey. Today, both Cappiello's posters and Venchi's heritage products are highly collectible, making this reproduction a wonderful tribute to two Italian institutions.
The poster has been carefully digitally restored by an artist remove any major signs of wear and tear and to refresh the original colours, retaining the vintage character of the poster.
